Empowering Communities and Restoring Nature through Collaborative Reforestation

In a remarkable demonstration of collaborative efforts, the 'Mindanao Tree Planting Program for our Climate and Communities' has achieved significant milestones in Brgy. Taytayan, Cateel, Davao Oriental. Spearheaded by the BaiAni Foundation, Kennemer Eco Solutions (KenEco), and Taytayan Multipurpose Cooperative (TMPC), with the support of PUR Projet, the project has not only made remarkable progress in reforestation but has also brought forth numerous environmental and socio-economic advantages for the local communities.

The story behind the project dates back to the aftermath of the devastating Typhoon Pablo in 2012, which left TMPC and its members facing immense challenges. The calamity had a profound impact on the farmer members, and it took them several years to regain their footing. However, the reforestation initiative has provided a glimmer of hope. By actively participating in the tree planting efforts, the farmer members of the cooperative have not only contributed to environmental recovery but have also found a path towards financial recovery. With the support of KenEco and PUR Projet, the cooperative receives payments for their reforestation efforts, ensuring a diversified income for the affected members.

Japhet Gayanilo, the TMPC General Manager, highlighted the benefits that the project has brought to the community. He emphasized four key advantages, including employment generation among coop members, increased environmental awareness, fulfilling their duties and responsibilities as the tenurial holder of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the benefits of the development plan encompassing 1,000.06 hectares.

Mary Jane Cauba, one of the farmer members, expressed her gratitude for the project's positive impact on her life and the lives of her family. She recounted the struggles they faced after Typhoon Pablo, saying, "We were devastated by Typhoon Pablo. We almost lost everything. It took us a few years to slowly recover. The tree planting project has been a great help to me and my family. Besides contributing to the forest, I also received additional financial support that we used for our daily needs, such as my children's education."

Cauba remains hopeful that the trees they planted will thrive, thereby ensuring a sustainable future for the project. Her sentiment is shared among the entire community, which eagerly looks forward to reaping the long-term environmental and socio-economic benefits of the Mindanao Tree Planting Program.

The successful implementation of this program serves as a shining example of how collaborative initiatives, combined with community empowerment and sustainable practices, can bring about positive change in the face of environmental challenges. The dedication and hard work put forth by the BaiAni Foundation, KenEco, TMPC, and PUR Projet have set a precedent for similar projects aimed at reforestation, conservation, and the betterment of both the environment and the lives of local communities.
